The only épée World Cup tournament in Switzerland brings together the best fencers* from around 60 nations. Spectators can expect correspondingly thrilling duels and atmosphere in the sports hall. The finals of the team competitions, which always take place on Sunday, are a particular highlight.

But what exactly is épée fencing? It is an Olympic sport of the first order. The aim is to hit the opponent with the tip of the rapier (fencing weapon) in the right places on the body. An épée match only lasts a maximum of nine minutes (three times three minutes). The decision is often made even earlier, namely when someone has reached 15 hits. This requires maximum concentration and nerves of steel from the participants. It is not uncommon for matches to end unexpectedly because the athletes launch surprise attacks.

Top Swiss fencer and long-time figurehead of the sport Max Heinzer retired in June 2024. Nevertheless, Switzerland’s chances of success are absolutely intact. Last year’s winner Lucas Malcotti will do everything in his power to successfully defend his title.

Practise early! If you have big dreams and would like to take part in the Berne World Cup yourself one day, you should definitely find out about training opportunities for juniors. The Bern Fencing Club is also always on the lookout for young talent.

Entry

Tickets are sold on site at the Mobiliar Arena and cost ten francs for adults and five francs for children. Catering will be provided by the Bern Fencing Club with a small bistro. Hot and cold meals and snacks will be available there.
