The picture shows the traditional Sichlete Alpabzug in Bern's old town. People in traditional costumes lead festively decorated cows through the streets. The cheerful atmosphere, despite the light rain, reflects the deep connection with tradition and community.

Cows in front of the Bundeshaus (Parliament)? Yup, but only once a year! On 16 September, farmers from throughout the canton of Bern will be presenting their profession at the «Sichlete» in the heart of the city.

The traditional event will be rung in (quite literally) at 10 a.m. by the Treichlergruppe Oberbalm and their cowbells. In addition to speeches and the arrival of the «Alpabzug» (cattle coming back from mountain pasture), a procession from the Nationales Pferdezentrum across Kornhausbrücke bridge to Bundesplatz square, the programme also includes sheep shearing – and delicious food: market stalls with regional specialities and products as well as yummy raclette await. Don’t miss out on this unique event!
