On Bahnhofplatz, Ryffligässchen, Neuengasse, Waisenhausplatz, Zeughausgasse, Kornhausplatz, Hotelgasse and, of course, in the Bundeshaus, there are fascinating stories about female personalities and their lives on almost every corner - peppered with facts that will amaze you, fill you with pride or just make you shake your head.

For example, education used to be reserved for men only. Women belonged in the kitchen and had to look after the children. It was only around 1900 that education went from being a privilege to a duty. It was at this time that compulsory, free, state-run primary school was introduced throughout Switzerland. But even then there were differences: for girls, the focus was primarily on handicraft and household lessons, which were intended to prepare them for running their own household. Despite the major changes in women's everyday lives, there was unfortunately still no major rethinking or questioning of the female role in society in the 20th century.

But there have always been pioneering women - women who refused to be pigeonholed and who achieved great personal success on their own terms and played a decisive role in shaping Swiss history. For example, do you know who Anna Seiler is and what she achieved in this country? Or who the first female Swiss Federal Councillor was and which political scandal unfortunately ended her career prematurely? You can find out all this and much more on the inspiring city tour "From the midwife to the first female Federal Councillor".
